When Paul Buck and his partner, Glenda George, arrived in November, they were eager to introduce Acker to their Paris friends. Among them was the poet Jean-Pierre Faye, who belonged to the Change group. A breakaway group from Tel Quel, Change was committed to advancing a “real” poetics that reflected the fragmentation of contemporary life as it was lived. Faye was a close friend and sometime collaborator with Jerome Rothenberg, Acker’s old crush and mentor. In Paris, they met as equals, but if she was excited about this, she was too circumspect to say so.

Acker attended Buck’s reading in the Beaubourg with Faye and other new friends. He’d been invited to read from his translations of modern French poets, but when the Pompidou declined to pay as agreed, he read a piece by Ulrike Meinhof instead. This was written by Meinhof while she was in solitary confinement at Stammheim prison, and Buck read fragments of the same text Acker had paraphrased in Toulouse Lautrec—
